The last 7 days have been big in the world of tech and social media! Instagram is finally letting users moderate comments, Twitter is finally nixing the 140 character limit, and of course – last week’s Apple Event brought big changes to the iPhone. So let’s get to it!
Instagram Filters Comments
In a much needed and long overdue update, Instagram is finally allowing its users to hide unwanted comments from appearing under posts. Considering that Instagram is owned by the social media giant, Facebook, it’s surprising that it’s taken this long, especially with increased reports of abuse and harassment on Instagram, as well as the fact that this feature has been available on Facebook brand pages for years. The good news is, you don’t ned to be a brand or celebrity to activate this new features. Just go into the Settings > Tap “Comments” > slide “Hide Unwanted Comments” to on. Choose which words you want to filter out and you’re ready to go!
Twitter Removes 140 Character Limit
Okay, this isn’t quite the case. Twitter has just lifted the restriction that links and media (both take 24 characters each) as well as mentions no longer count toward the 140 character limit. As an active Twitter user, it’s about damn time we got this feature! Now we just need the ability to edit Tweets and we’ll be golden.
Super Mario comes to iOS
This was quite possibly my favourite announcement from last week’s Apple Event – I finally get to relive one of the best parts of my childhood, because Super Mario is coming to the App Store! It’s not quite available for download yet, but you can set up notifications in the App Store so you’ll be the first to know when it becomes available to download.
iOS 10 is released
iOS upgrades are also one of my favourite times of the year, and this year is definitely no different. If you’re on #TeamiPhone, the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system became available for general release today. iOS 10 includes awesome features like the ability to act upon lock screen notifications without actually unlocking your phone, dynamic and handwritten iMessages, a built-in gif keyboard, emoji prediction and much, much more. If you haven’t updated yet, what are you waiting for!?
The iPhone 7
And of course, the one thing everyone was talking about over the last week – the iPhone 7 was officially released. The new iPhone is now water and dust resistant, comes in new finishes (shiny & matte black), in addition to the Gold, Rose Gold, and Silver lineup. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be happy to know that Apple has finally killed the 16GB iPhone. After being plagued with the “storage almost full” notification for months now, I definitely won’t be losing any sleep over this change.
In last week’s biggest announcement regarding the iPhone, Apple took the “courage” to kill the headphone jack, which means no more road-trip DJ – well, kind of. Apple will include the Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Adapter in each box, and if you want to stay wireless, you can invest in AirPods for a cool $219 CAD.
Is it time to upgrade? If you’re a proud owner of an iPhone 6 or 6s, probably not. If you’re still holding on to the 5S or earlier, you could upgrade, but you could also stick it out for another year. 2017 is the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, and rumour has it that the next iPhone is going to be a complete overhaul and definitely worth the upgrade.
